Ocean Info Day
09 September 2010
Brussels
Oceans offer opportunities for sustainable economic development. However, human activities are exerting increasing environmental pressure on the oceans, threatening marine ecosystems and sustainable maritime activities. In particular, the growing demand for maritime transport, offshore energy, tourism, coastal development, resource extraction, fisheries and aquaculture may have a major impact on the marine environment.
The European Union has taken up this challenge and established a new integrated maritime policy, of which the Communication A European Strategy for Marine and Maritime Research (COM (2008) 534) is a fundamental part. The strategy highlights the importance of integration between established marine and maritime research disciplines, in order to reinforce excellence in science and to reconcile the growth of sea-based activities with environmental sustainability.
The ocean of tomorrow 2011 call is the second cross-thematic call for proposals to implement this commitment.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE INFODAY?
To underline the relevance of the subject and the importance of the joint effort among different FP7 Themes, the event will be opened by two European Commissioners, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Commissioner for Research and Innovation, and Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
The morning session will continue with a general presentation of the rationale for this call, its modalities for implementation, and the presentation of the topics. A panel of Commission representatives will then answer questions from participants on how they can best address the integration and multidisciplinary features of the call.
The afternoon will be dedicated to a brokerage session with flash presentations from participants and to networking. The event will close with a Questions & Answers session with the Commission representatives.
WHO IS THIS DAY FOR?
The Information Day is for everyone interested in the research opportunities offered by the call FP7-OCEAN-2011. That means researchers and research institutions, universities, industry, small and medium size enterprises, civil society organisations and National Contact Points.
